Yeah... Friend computer. Gleefully sending you off to your death.

Participants are reminded that once the tests are complete you will be bathed and there will be cake.

Brilliant, so well written.

"...you will be baked and there will be cake." I think it is.

I miss my Companion Cube :(
I wonder if one of my friends can make me a little plush one.
That would be cool :)

LOL Plushie companion cube...

I'm sure it's bathed...

Friend Computer rambles on about Tea and cake a number of times.

I'm currently on the level with all the platforms and turrets with the 2 rooms above each other on the far side of the chamber.

I've solved it (I think), I just can't seem to find the exit...

Yeah was an awsome game, although like the man said... way too short. I was not expecting something hugh though, as it was mainly just a testing out of their new technology. Which is awsome by the way.

I would highly recommend playing this, as it is awsome and will only take 1 hour, 2 at the most to beat.

Also, I really miss my Companion Cube as well, that was the saddest moment in a game by far.....

I was not expecting something hugh though, as it was mainly just a testing out of their new technology.

It wasn't a tech demo for them. It was a game developed as a final year project by a group of uni students, that Valve decided they liked and made a polished game out of. The original student team are now all employed at Valve!

i like how the company in portal 'aperture' technologies even get mentioned in the Half life 2 episode 2 story!!

Tis great - although I only got chance to play through about 10 levels... Is there only 19 levels? - or do you unlock a new set when you get to the 19th?

It wasn't a tech demo for them. It was a game developed as a final year project by a group of uni students, that Valve decided they liked it and just appropriated all rights in exchange for a 6 month contract doing make-work, then released it. The original student team are now all employed at Valve! Until next Tuesday...

Fixed.

Fixed.

They've actually been working there for well over a year now (close to two I think it was). Not to mention that with a year at Valve under your belt, you can pretty much walk into a job with any other developer you want. ;)

Not everyone is EA! (*cough* Trauma Studios *cough*)

well yeah.. there are 19... official aperture 'research' tests to go through.......

And then the six "advanced" tests, which can be a challenge - which are revamped versions of earlier tests. Then there are the challenge versions if you're interested.

Theres a nice built in feature for custom maps though, and hopefulyl lots of custom packs will be available before too long!!

me has a feeling (from aperture mention in ep2) that perhaps we will soon see a portal gun feature in a small section of ep 3???

hmm whatever happened to the mini striders i saw screenies of everywhere? must have taken em out. originally saw em in ep 1 screenies!

gotta say the first game ive actually enjoyed from start to finish (ok it wasnt very long) in a LONG time...

the comedy in it is BRILLIANT and SO well written!

superb!

we need more innovative 'thinking outside the box' games like this. I love a game that focuses on providing a unique user experience rather than just cloning everything else

Companion Cube ? I couldn't get rid of it quick enough. Nothing more than a contrived necessary burden.

Portal is very cool, though. I've done the 19 levels. Hope to finish the rest today.

Well, I'm with Ve on this.

A pink heart painted on a box doesn't make it anything more than a box.

Oh, and I finally made it out of that level and into the "behind the scenes" areas.

I'll see where that goes later tonight.

I love portal - it fits perfectly into my busy life. I can sit down for 15 mins and play a bit more of a level (or finish one off)

Just finished the companion cube thingy level last night. I really don't get what all the fuss is - it's a box - it stops me getting shot - it was fun sending it to burn

The thing I thought strange about the lovebox level was that (if you listen to the dev commentary) the level was to teach you to use a box as a shield. But I was using the normal boxes as shields in the previous level with the turrets.

G0rF
10-16-2007, 12:36 PM
Same.

Haven't listened to the commentary.

I don't really care what they think of their game, they must think it's good or they wouldn't have released it.

It's my opinion that's important, and I form that from playing the game.

Dragonstorm
10-16-2007, 12:40 PM
Commentaries have nothing to do with what they think about their game :S You can listen to them on most of the recent source games, and are clips of the deveopers talking about their design and artistic decisions, along with nice justifications for those choices.

It's really interesting stuff. e.g In one of the TF2 commentaries, they give a little talk on how/why they made spies the way they did (a mask on their face), talking about how the reactions in beta testing led them there, etc.

Why would a Dev just talk over their game about what they like in it? Who would listen to that? lol!

G0rF
10-16-2007, 01:18 PM
Uh huh.

I was being facetious.

I spend all day immersed in "production pipelines" and "design decisions" and "structure amends"... I really have little interest in doing the same in my spare time.

I really don't care why a game is the way it is, if it's good, it's good, if it's not, then it's not!

I guess that was my point.

I'm not ignorant, I'm rude :)

EDIT: I should add that I'm an engineer, not a developer, so I find all this stuff intensely boring. For someone like yourself, who plans to get into it as a career, I'd imagine it was mana from heaven ;)

Now, you show me a documentary about the latest Deep-Blue, or Google's super-secret Georgia Forest Cache, and I'll be riveted for hours!

Currently watching a documentary about the new cable-nexus being built in the Philippines to link China, Japan, Malaysia and the Polynesian Islands, the big-ass routers and load balancers (of particular interest) and the prospective data-haven the local leader proposes.

It's a slow day at work... everyone else is on an away-day, whatever that is...

Jekht

I havn't watched the commentarys yet, but I might just check out the final HL2 episode 2 commentary, as that area was quite short so will require minimum input by me (practically just sit back and enjoy!)
