Right, do people read comics much here?
I'm a big old comic geek who's always happy to talk comics and reccomend cool ones have them reccomended back.

So what do you read and what can you reccomend?

Me?
Just now I no longer by single comics anymore unless it's a one-off, as it's too much of a financial investment. Instead I buy trade paperbacks, savign myself a bit cash, but ultimately taking longer to satisfy my jollies.

My current ongoing collections:
She-Hulk - Dan Slott writes an awesomely funny comic with lots of throwbacks to the stories and characters of years ago.
Loveless - Westerns just don't get any darker or grittier. This is pure asphalt.
100 Bullets - Dark, gritty, fantastic and yet very, very human...
Kabuki - An old classic series, only recently got round to collecting it.
The Maxx - Collected the comics years ago, but due to keith's erratic output I missed about 5 titles from the full set. So am getting the trades to ensure I have everything.

Highly reccomended:
GLA Missassembled - The Great Lakes Avengers are dumb, hopeless and ultimately pointless. But only they can save the planet! Gripping and an absolute laugh. Dan Slott is great.

As much as it will give away my secret dorkiness... I do / did. Actually right now I am reading The Eternals by Neil Gainman. Takes place in the Marvel Universe. Not to bad. The Sandman graphic novels are a must.

Sandman and Preacher were some of my first proper foiays into the world of graphic novels.
Eternals looked cool and proper Kirby stylee, but I only got the first 3 parts. Will get the trade when I have more money (and remember).

Does manga count as a comic? If so, start reading the Akira manga.
A good manga is the equivalent to any good graphic novel.

If not, then stick with a few of G's suggestions. Frank Miller especially... that and the Mike Dringenberg - Neil Gaiman combo!

Some people refer to comics as solely western releases nowadays, as words like manga become more acceptable for the mainstream. Some people dislike all manga, manhua, etc, and so the suggestion of Akira would be ignored.

That and I had been awake for too long. I r no super genius k? :)

I never differentiated Manga from Western Comics, even if you have to read right to left it's still a comic. Someone trying to argue otherwise is a bit weird.
But I personally don't read a lot of it, but do collect Lone Wolf & Cub, Samurai Executioner and will be picking up the new Assassin one soon.

I make no distinction.

Manga is japanese for comicbook. Comicbook is english for manga.
