I was reading something somewhere about EVE and I had a question.....
If you just start the game today, won't you never catch up with your mates or the other current players of the game?
Into matrix terms..... if Unforgiven (thought you would never think that name again huh) started a month before me..... doesn't that mean he is always going to be that much more powerful because our skills will load up at the same pace. I know what skill you level may be completely different, but I am speaking general terms.
So if Renz starts playing now, wont he never be able to touch one of the people that first started playing the game..... as they probably have like uber character / ship / whatever now?

Easy answer: Nope.
There is so many skills in eve (i take it you are thinking about a pvp perspective)...someone could have spend their years skilling up economy/social etc ... im sure the others can expand on this.

Difficult... if you both are training exactly the same skills (supposed you learn them without any break) you wont catch him...
If hes training many different skills, and your speciallizing directly on whatever you want to do, you can pass him.
Oh, and max out a char is nearly impossible, you need like 4 years, but they are adding skills from time to time, so its pretty improbable that you can learn everything....

No, I destroy everything that moves, ever, with minimal effort, nomatter how long they have been playing, all the time, no exeptions, period.

So, Trillian, does this mean you will be joining us in the black?

Basically, what they said ^
Sure, you may not be able to catch up in terms of the raw number of skillpoints, but that's only ebcause there isn't a 'maximum level' or even really such a concept as 'end game' in EVE. Trying to approach it and think about it in terms of more typical MMOs has been known to break people's heads...
It all depends what you want to do, a little on luck and mostly on the skill of the player. The way the skill traiing system works is a case of diminishing returns. Mere minutes to an hour or two for the first level in a skill, granting you the ability to use something, or giving you some kind of 5-10% bonus on something. Then it gets much, much longer. Some of the most extreme skill can take well over a month to get from level 4 to level 5, and all for that little %5 extra. That's the main difference between a 4-year old vet character and a 1 year old non-vet character. That vet will have spent those extra 3 years getting the% extra from hitting level 5 in the core skills, while the newer one will have theirs at 3-4. The time difference really doesn't reflect accurately the stat boost difference, and whether you have 50,000 or 52,500 armour hit points doesn't necessarily mean that much because of all the different factors involved in a fight.
Heh, oops. Bit of :walloftext: syndrome there...

No, I don't have the patience for that, just curious.
