Well, as u may have noticed in the shoutbox, I have some problems with my computer and it seems that I won't be online for a couple of days now.

I don't know what's wrong, but maybe one of our tech genius have an idea.

Ok, thats what happened so far:

i started my computer and the hdd with the os wasnt detected (have this from time to time, but a simple reconnect of the connector fixed it all the time).
i started my comp again and everything looked good so far .... win xp booted without problems and so on, but after a couple of mins my comp freezed and i had to restart again. now i had the same problem that the hdd wasnt detected ... so reconnect and restart and now i got the great msg "Error reading the HDD" (something like that .... as i have a german windows / system, i dunno how those error msgs looks like in english).

then I started my comp with linux to check if i can access my partitions (I have 2 on this hdd ... one for os other for progz). I wasn't able to access the partition with my os on it.
next thing that came into mind, win xp cd and repair .... well, at least worth a try. so i started my comp with the win xp cd. the hardware check started and thats it ... i got a black screen and thats how my comp looks since 40mins.

soooo, any ideas?

It does sound like a dead drive J1G.

I have one here I'm looking at for a friend, seems to do pretty much the same.

The one I have gets to "Resuming windows", the bar along the bottom fills, then it sits......... and does nothing.

Knoppix boot is next I guess, see if I can get in the back door.

Oh, and 3/4 year old drive? DENARY has posted elsewhere that a HDD lasts 2 years. And DENARY is a professional, so he must be right, eh?

I hear a hint of Sarcasm there :D I think here 2 years is closer to 5 years GORF
but it's completely random that it would fail after 3/4 of a year so meh I hope you had a guarantee on it, they usually have it for around a year or so, at least WDC do, not sure bout Maxtor.

2 years guarantee, but i dont give hdds away before i erased them and a 3rd hdd wont hurt anyways :p

I have to say i found Maxtor Drives to be absolute crap from my experience:mad:

Currently using a hitachi Deskstar...very nice sata drive, looking to buy a second one and a 3rd plus an external *looks at bank balance* in a month or 2 or longer :-/

But when i had a major sticky freezy comp...I turned out the Grfx card had burned out the fan causing the Processor to fuse to the Mobo... [that was an expensive repair]

But anyway j1g glad to hear its all coming back to functioning order:)

Glad to hear all is ok, but I would just like to inform you as to why it went BANG *dead* on you....

IT WAS A MAXTOR HARDRIVE THEY SUCK BALLS TO THE TEETH!!!!!!! Samsung are far better, everytime someone I know has had a Maxtor hardrive something has gone wrong. Say No to Maxtor, oh and nice choice on the GPU :p

Maxtor drives give you best bang for your buck, as they say. All HDDs fail eventually so there's no point shelling out for a seemingly more reliable brand. I say seemingly because there's no evidence that Maxtor drives are any worse than any other, there's just more of them around so you're going to see more complaints. It's only a %age of sales though.

Hitachi drives...noisy.

Samsung drives...LMAO.

WDC drives...more money than sense.

IBM drives...where'd you steal them from, LOL.

All my drives are Maxtor BTW (cept that damn noisy hitachi one). 2 failures out of approx 15 in 6 years, can't be bad.

Shall we talk about SCSI drives now ? LOL

i) could be...never really thought of it like that

ii) Hitachi noisy??? mine's pretty quiet TBH....quieter than my maxtor which used to click and weerrrr make the floor shake:eek: no it really did sound like a broken aircraft trying to fly

Sorry you are having prob's Jig, hopefully you'll be able to get enough out of the disk's final moments of life to recover any important stuff.... stick it in an external enclosure....easier to shake violently, gimme the info or else!!...actually several of my old disks responded to this ;)

I'm sure Lux ;) cause reinstalling stuff is a pain :p

Oh and I got my HDD and gfx card today and reinstalled windows. So everything looks fine so far, except the fact that I cannot access my wlan routers configuration interface (SSID is hidden and I have to change the pw for my network) .... so hopefully I can fix this problem tomorrow ..... grrrr stupid computer
