View Full Version : Member's Profile Idea...

Seeing as this is, after all, a gaming community and most of the discussions that take place in this forum are gaming-related it appears to me that member profiles are perhaps less focused on the members actual gameplay style / experiance than they should be. More focused on the member's real life: what they do for a living, thier age... Et cetera, an' lets face it, the reason most of us kick back at home to a good online shoot 'em-up/beat 'em-up/elf masturbation session is to escape our real lives and become someone else.

Ok, I'm ranting a little here, veering off topic. Apologies.

What I'd like to see is more details about the member as a gamer, much like an XFIRE profile, Gameplay Style, Favourite Game Genre, seems like silly little things but would just be a nice touch IMO.

Another idea is a gaming history list, a complete list of all the games the member in question has played, enjoyed, and feels is worth a mention. Maybe a star-rating from one to five on the player's completion or mastery of the game. Nothing serious, no egos.

Another thing, I'd like to see is forum tags that display what games the member is playing, something visual -- an image. Like a small 20 x 100 icon below the members avatar with Matrix code for a MxOer, the EVE gate (Or whatever the wormhole thingy that started off EVE was called) for an EVE player...

Sure, you could look at a member's tag (Causality Commander - EVE) for instance, but here's just too much text around these parts it seems, not enough pretty stuff to look at. Sure I could just start a thread asking people to list thier gaming history, but then it'd just be another thread in a forum, aye?

Just brainstorming ways to push the site into a more 'universal' gaming website, less 'Just another gamers forum' where when there's not a newly read post there's nothing to do but log off. Now I think of it a screenshot gallerey would be nice too... Oh! . What about a section devoted only to professional-style reviews by our members, much like the Other Games section but without the banter? ;)

Jekht before you run a mile, I'm not asking anithing of you, anything I can do I'd do off my own back provided everyone was in agreement.

So, thaughts? Anyone? :)

Liking it.

Wouldn't recommend a "full history of gaming", but fave genres and games of those genres, definately.

The forum tags = TOP idea. Wouldn't it get lost in the awards though?

Could ask everyone to edit their location to fit their game, I suppose...

you could probably do something like that with usergroups for EvE MxO Vanguard ect. dunno if you could do the images using the usergroups though.

Yeah I guess you could but then you have to think about people that're currently playing two games, such as myself that's on MxO and 2142. So that's two tags = two usergroups?? Plus you have custom usergroups, and the commander usergroup... It'd start getting more complicated than it's worth.

Really all I had in mind was preset icons (Much like the avatars) that a member would select upon registering or via the User CP to display under his avatar what game he's playing.

Also... G0rF doesn't like the gaming history thing? That was one of my favourite ideas lol. :-/

I didn't like the idea for some simple reasons.

Gaming histories tend to turn into pissing contests.

I couldn't be arsed to do it TBH. But someone else will, so I'll have to, then I'll get pissed off with it, some other f*cker will troll it, etc, etc. (You've seen how gaming tastes cause clashes already).

To list all the games I have played (in the tens of thousands), enjoyed (in the hundreds) or completed (every game I pay for gets completed).

Fave Arcade game (either Tac/Scan, Disks of Tron or Defender), Fave PC Game (Eve), Fave Console (Ghost-Recon 2) game should be enough to get an idea.

Or set a few genre catagories and get people to complete them; ie: fave MMO, fave FPS, fave "Coin-collector", fave bright-flashy-jap-import, kinda thing...

Ah, I guess. Good reasons, good reasons...

I should have added that it'd be totally optional but like you say to some people it could turn into a 'Pissing Contest' especially to those that've been around ince the gaming industry began... (Old farts ;)) Myself, I guess my earliest memories of the gaming industry is Robocop on the NES, shortly followed by Streets of Rage, Sonic the Hedgehog, Shinobi etc... All that lot, and I tend to stick to one game, play it to death and then move on to the next, so myself I naturally wouldn't have that big of a list. I guess I didn't take into account those that've litterally played every game going.

Hmm, I still like the idea though but your points have opened my eyes. How about something like... A gaming history with a maximum of 20/25 games, that way it'll never become a pissing contest in terms of HOW MANY games you've played compaired to the next guy and concentrate more on the actual member's gaming history...

By the small response I can't really get the jsf if people think this is a good/bad idea. I'd like to know other people's thaughts on this, Acker? Veube? Grriffin? Or is it really that y'all just don't give a sh!te either way lol.

Good idea Renz.

Game tags...Something kinda like the above ? So when you hover over the icon it gives you a popup of the game name. Now I look at it again those mini icons might be a bit small. Maybe something along those lines but with bigger icons.

Sounds like a simple addition but I guess these things are never simple.

I think its a good idea overall, particularly if it can be geared towards providing a picture of gaming likes and dislikes over the kind of gaming leetism that Dv/Gorf points out that might occur. Favourite games of each generation, favourite genres, disliked genres would bring players with the same or similar tastes together etc. This to me is more relevant than any personal details etc.

Moving back to the idea of the icons denoting game... perhaps call it in from x-fire's "most played this week"?

Can't be anything more complex than an xml feed, can it?

Question is more whether or not we, the public can access that feed.

Great idea G0rF!

An' yeup Veube you're spot on! Exactly what I was thinking though I had bigger/prettier icons in mind... Something like, this...

Me likes it ;)

Those icons will clarify a lot, especially if we enter more games and more people from different games interact here.
Adding alt names and so on to the profile pages too.

Busy hell days at work and short replies FTW.
