thers been a few posts about SWG on other threads and obviously we are about to merge with SOE sooo as a long term player (18 months +) of SWG and having played MXO since euro launch i thought id do a personal comparison of the two - other SWG players may like to add their opinions and hopefully anyone who is thinking of getting the station pass and playing both games will have a better idea of what they are getting in to :D
1. content and size - SWG wins this hands down. Much bigger and loads to do and see
2. avatar - SWG wins again. better graphics - much more customisable avatar that you can change the look of all the time - theres even a profession who's job it is - image designer.
3. storyline - MXO was better. SWG used to be very lame on plot - just go and fetch missions. SWG is improving a bit with recent
t expansions but MXO won this until recently.
4 crafting - SWG wins easily - if you want to build and make stuff you are in heaven. Crafting is massive and very detailed and tbh you could spend your whole time just crafting - some players do
5 roleplay -this is close, neither game is good because of the players. - roleplayers seem to be limited in both games - but you can find them!!
6 grinding - well SWG is grind grind grind and so is MXO - but if you think getting to 50 in MXO is hard thats peanuts compared to getting to jedi....theres major grinding to be done in SWG to get to the higher level roles - personally i cant be arsed.
7 combat - MXO wins this easily - i love the simplicity of the MXO combat system and the way it looks. its quick and easy to use. SWG has a new system which i havent played much. There was a lot of whining about the Combat Upgrade (CU) which is the "ruined the game" patch you hear mentioned. - but combat was shit before and i feel its better now.
8 PvP - im no expert on PvP but seems easier to get into on MXO - it used to be all about who had the best buffs in SWG but recent changes have again levelled the playing fields. Its and "opt in" system you elect to be "special forces" and then you are open to give and take PvP with other special forces players. All jedi are PvP all the time and are hunted by bounty hunters. I prefer MXO though.
9 Live Events - was MXO's strength - i hope that comes back soon. Virtually non-existant in SWG.
10 quests/missions - MXO has the advantage of things being "instanced" so noone else turns up to steal your kills or camp the boss. SWG hasnt and at times it can be a real pisser to travel a long way to find all the bad guys already dead and any loot long gone -or some lame guy farming the bosses - which incidently take ages to respawn sometimes - like 50 mins or more!
11 solo/teamplay - SWG used to be very soloable but the combat changes have meant that teamplay is now an essential - personally i really like that cos i play mmo's to spend time with people but soloists may not be happy long term (unless your big on the crafting and buying/selling game)
finally a word on the "space" element of SWG - this is a whole new game in itself and a pretty cool space fighting simulator. The first time you step into your new shiny TIE fighter..wow! This really made the game for me when it was introduced a year ago.
which one to play? - well right now MXO is very dull and SWG wins hands down for me. BUt once the mergers is away and MXO starts to get more content and live events again then its a close run thing - three months ago I played nothing but MXO.
for me the station pass with both games available looks a damn fine deal
for the Glory of the Empire!
